One day after his remarkable comeback victory, Radprofi Fabio Jakoben (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) narrowly missed the next success in Spain tour. The Dutchman had to be beaten in the target sprint of the 5th Vuelta stage only the Belgian Jasper Philipsen.
The red jersey of the overall leaders took over the Frenchman Kenny Elissonde (Trek-SegaFredo), Favorit Primoz Roglic (Slovenia / Jumbo-Visa) lurks with five seconds behind.
Both benefited on the 184 km Long stage of Tarancon to Albacete from a mass crash in the main field. Also, the previous leader pure Taaramäe (Intermarche-Wanty-Golbert) came to a fall, ElisSonde and Roglic seemed against it. Taaramäe is thus persecuted by the bad luck: Already on Tuesday he had fallen, but so shortly the goal that he lost no time in the classification.
Jakobsen had won the fourth stage on Tuesday and thus celebrated his first victory after a long time of suffering: only a good year earlier he had fallen heavily at the Poland tour and had suffered life-threatening head injuries. On Wednesday he was on the last meters against Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) can easily, but kept the green jersey of the best sprinter. For Philipsen it was already the second day victory at this year’s Vuelta.
